Amending the policy: what can change, and how

A good policy can move together with your life: most of its elements can be amended – some at any time, some typically tied to the anniversary. This article is a small map of amendments.

In brief:
  • Typically amendable at any time: the beneficiary designation and your details.
  • Typically tied to the anniversary or to specific conditions: changing the sum insured and the premium payment structure.
  • An amendment only takes effect in writing – there is no such thing as a verbal agreement in the insurance world.

What you can do at any time

Changing the beneficiary designation is the policyholder's right – it can typically be done at any time, in writing, with the insured's consent; the details are in the designation article. In the same way, a change of details can be arranged at any time: address, name, contact details, account number. There is no need to wait for the anniversary for these – and it is not worth it either.

What is typically tied to the anniversary

Changing the sum insured and amending the premium payment structure (frequency, method) are typically possible with the insurance anniversary – some insurers set this out explicitly, while practice is more flexible elsewhere. Raising the sum insured beyond indexation can mean the insurer taking on new risk, so it may come with its own rules. The practical route: signal the request for an amendment a few weeks before the anniversary – this way it can be assessed comfortably and takes effect on the anniversary date.

The right process for an amendment

Naming a beneficiary and reporting a change of details are unilateral declarations: they take effect on receipt by the insurer – it's still worth keeping the confirmation regardless. Changing the sum insured or the premium payment structure, by contrast, takes effect once the insurer accepts it. It is worth keeping the confirmation alongside the policy document, in the folder. For my clients, preparing amendments is my job: it is enough to tell me what you would like – I take care of the forms, the process, and following up on the confirmation.

What an amendment cannot do

Honestly, the limits too: the insured person cannot be swapped – a new insured means a new policy. The basic rules of a product already taken out (the waiting-period regime, the graded years, the logic behind the end of premium payment) cannot be reshaped afterwards – these would only change through switching products, that is, a new policy, which is rarely a good trade because the waiting period starts over. If a policy no longer fits your situation at its core, that is the subject of a review – there, we go through every option.
